Nursing Adjunct Faculty
Mother of 8

Dr. Michelle Cuevas has been a Registered Nurse (RN) since 1996. She obtained her Master’s Degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner (NP) from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX in 2009 and her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from  Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX in 2014.

She is experienced in many areas of nursing including caring for the sickest patients in ICU, working as a manager on the medical-surgical floor, and helping to educate fellow staff-members and other nurses. Although she values all of her experiences as an RN, her favorite job as a nurse was as coordinator for organ recovery. She would arrange for the organs to be collected after someone died so they could then be used for individuals waiting for organ donation. She is passionate about this life-saving service and continues to support Donate Life America.

Currently, Dr. Cuevas is an adjunct professor at Azusa Pacific University and practices full-time at MinuteClinic, a walk-in clinic run from inside some CVS drugstores/pharmacies. She loves how convenient these clinics have proven to be for busy patients, and, of course, they can fill their prescriptions or obtain over-the-counter medications right on the premises!

Inspired by her experiences as a student, NP, and student mentor, Dr. Cuevas started her own business. NP-ED provides individualized educational services to NPs, NP students, and nurses in the San Diego Area. (Visit NP-ED’s Facebook Page here.) NP-ED is the only NP- and nursing-specific company to provide tutoring and consultation services via one-on-one or small-group meetings. Some of the topics covered by NP-ED include assessment of knowledge, tutoring and/or consultation on the disease and management of any primary care issue, board reviews, ECG interpretation, and much more.

Here are some testimonials from NP-ED’s website:

“Dr. Cuevas is the ideal preceptor for NP students. She is a wonderful mentor, full of knowledge, and eager to share. Her passion for medicine and caring for patients shines through her actions. She had my success in mind every day and tailored a clear path to teaching me what was necessary. I undoubtedly recommend her to anybody wishing to succeed. She has been an integral asset on my journey to becoming an NP.”Kristin Dampier, RN (Cal State, San Diego, CA) December 2014

“Dr. Cuevas was one of my best preceptors! She’s like a walking guideline book and full of knowledge and expertise. My time with Dr. Cuevas fully prepared me to assess, plan, and document patients in an efficient manner. She serves as a very valuable resource in my Nurse Practitioner career, even today!”Chevonne T, FNP (Oklahoma City, OK) June 2012

“You were a great preceptor and it was a great experience. I was always learning. You took the time to discuss rationales for treatment choices. By the end, I felt prepared to see patients on my own. You will be a great preceptor and instructor for future students. I think about my clinical experience with you and all that I learned from you often. It definitely made me a better NP.”Tami Altstatt, FNP (Oklahoma City, OK) May 2011

Dr. Cuevas has been a member of her state and national NP organizations since she was an NP student, serving as board member in both Oklahoma and California. She was a member of the California Association of Nurse Practitioners Health Policy and Practice committee in 2013. And, she continues to informally serve as a National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Ambassador to help educate NPs and students on student loan repayment opportunities.

Dr. Cuevas is happily married with eight children (11-25 years old) and a toy fox terrier. When not continuously striving to provide excellent patient care she loves to read and spend time with her family. She is excited to announce that she will soon be promoted to Grandma!
